Make a Complete Backup

This routine copies the Roughneck data files (all files with a last name of DBF) from one directory on your hard disk to another.  The data in the original data directory is not deleted.  After completion you will have two sets of the data on your hard disk.

Select Utilities - Backup/Restore - Make a Complete Backup

Used primarily to make Quick Temporary Backups of your data prior to running one of the update routines, such as, period and year end closings.  There is no substitute for backing up to disks to protect against a "hard disk crash", however this utility is much quicker.  It is designed for use when you already have a  Permanent Backup  on disk of yesterday's data.  You cannot backup files to a disk using this routine. Disk backup should be done outside of the Roughneck program.  Refer to your Windows manual concerning disk backup or contact RSI to purchase our Roughneck Backup Utility program.

THE BACKUP FROM DIRECTORY defaults to the name of your current data directory.  If you want to make a backup from a different directory, you must go change your current data directory to the one desired.

THE BACKUP TO DIRECTORY defaults to C:\RPLATEBAK.  The C:\RPLATEBAK directory was created by the install routine during installation of the programs.  Normally temporary backups are made to this directory; however, you can enter the name of any directory.  If you have more than one data directory, you should create another directory for backing up your 2nd data directory to a different sub directory other than the C:\RPLATEBAK directory.  Don't forget the drive and the backslash.

After entering the " Backup To" directory, The Platinum Edition verifies that the directory exists.  If the sanity check fails, you have either entered the directory name incorrectly, or Roughneck is unable to locate the directory, or the directory does not exist.  This routine will ask if you want to create the directory.  If you choose Yes the directory will automatically be created for you. The directory must exist before you can backup files to it.

If the "Backup To" directory is found, all Roughneck files are copied to the directory.  (Index files are not copied).  Data files in the " Backup From" directory are not erased; therefore, you will have two sets of the files upon completion.
